Email: BYO dinner TONIGHT

Oops been a bit slack with this term's emails... but here's an important one:

Hi trampers

We're meeting early tomorrow to let you plan some holiday tramping, so come along to Bentley's Wing of the UCSA at 7pm. After that we'll be heading across Ilam Rd to Foo San on Roundtree St at 7:30pm for a Club BYO (it's next door to Captain Ben's if you don't already know)... fun social way to end the term and find out what's going on in the next few weeks! We've got a booking for 25 people so try to make the meeting beforehand if you want to be one of them. Spread the word so everyone knows what's going on, the uni email system isn't quite as reliable as it could be... Foo San is pretty reasonably priced Chinese, will probably set you back $10-$20 depending on how hungry you are, if you want to bring a bottle of wine we believe it is $1 corkage as well, we'll be ordering meals separately so you can get whatever you want. They've asked us to make sure we're out by the time they close at 9:30pm, sounds like plenty of time, if you get too loud and drunk they probably won't like it either so no need to act like it's Bush Ball 2, but I'm sure you'll all be nicely mannered, this is the Tramping Club after all. See you there! Hmm I've probably forgotten something but I think that's all from me for now. Remember to get your TROGs in to Lindsey!

Boots for Sale!

Hello CUTC-ers,

I am trying to get rid of a pair of used (women's) hiking boots, U.S.
size 8 (U.K. size 6.5). They're in great shape, treads, uppers, and
insides still in good nick. I've only work them about 6 times over 3
years, because they're too big for me. Great brand Salomon contragrip
soles. I'd like to sell them for $50 (worth about 100 USD or 140
NZD), but I am flexible as they're too heavy to take home again.
Anyone interested? I leave the country on Tuesday, so be quick of you
are!

Cheers,

Email: Last meeting of the semester

Hi trampers

This week's meeting will be short and simple as we wind down for the end of semester and frantically work on those assignments that got neglected during TWALK. Come along to hang out with everyone for one last time before the break, see some TWALK photos, write a last TROG, sign up for some Queen's Birthday long weekend tramping and plan holiday adventures, before heading out to the pub or home to study, depending on how stressed you're feeling right now. We'll also have some info about and possibly sign-ups for snowcraft next term, the very popular instruction trip.

By all reports TWALK was a success and a great time. Results are up on the website, Otago won the student competition and apparently we owe them a keg or two... hmm. If you enjoyed TWALK please give Dave a HUGE THANK YOU when you see him... two months ago TWALK had no organiser, no location, no plan. He stepped up, took charge and did what needed to be done to make it happen at very little notice. Thanks to everyone for helping out (whether with muffin-making, cleaning, etc), for being great sports about all the uh, non-smoothness about the way we've had to run TWALK this year, and for 197 people signing up anyway! Big thanks to the all the cooks and head cook Rune, and Brian who spent a lot of time sorting out your teams and results. If you're interested in organising TWALK next year let us know, the sooner the better! If we pulled this off in two months, think about the amazing event you can create with a whole year to plan...

Hoping to see you back next term... Upcoming events include Clubs Day 14 July and first meeting of semester that night, Refreshers 16-17 July, snowcraft 23-24 July, Bush Ball (yet to be confirmed but most likely 30-31 July or 6-7 August), our annual avalanche talk, our annual skills evening, a quiz night, and I'm hoping to sort out a high ropes course and end term with a BYO dinner. Plus a couple of awe-inspiring guest speakers and of course lots and lots of tramps!

Note from Lindsey: Last chance to get your TROGs in if you want to win the $170 day pack on Wednesday! I'll be giving this out to the best TROG for semester 2, so send them to trog@cutc.org.nz by Wed if you want to be in with a chance of winning it. Hope all of you who were involved with TWALK had a great time, and didn't get too lost! I want to put TWALK in trog, so can you send me some of your best photos (trog@cutc.org.nz) or bring them to one of the Wednesday meetings on a USB and I'll get them from you. And if anyone wants to write down something about their experience on TWALK that'd be awesome - just a few quotes or notes to go with the pics. If you manage to get them to me by this Wednesday you'll be in the running for the prize, otherwise I'll make sure I include you in the prize for next semester's best TROG.

Suggested weekend tramps:

Mount Herbert

1 day, 5-6hours
Mount Herbert rises on the southern side of the crater rim of lyttelton Harbour to a height of 919 metres above sea level, and is the highest point on Banks Peninsula. A bird’s eye view of Canterbury and the surrounding Southern Alps.

Three-mile Stream - Hope-Kiwi Lodge Circuit

3 days
This trip begins at Loch Katerine and follows easy tracks through forests and along river flats

Mt Isobel

1 day, 4-5 hours
Climb high above Hanmer Springs and then have a soak in the (commercial) hot pools afterwards if you’ve still got time.

Welcome flat

2 day, 6 hours each way
Perfect opportunity to go to arguably the best back-country hot pools around!! The middle day allows you to go exploring further up valley towards Copland Pass (with views of Mt Sefton and Footstool), else just soak... Always a very social trip : )

Tarn Col (Edwards – Hawdon route)

2 ½ days, 6-9 hour longest day
This is a fantastic trip crossing two impressive alpine passes. It includes two nice huts and Well worth the effort. Ice-axe and crampons might be required depending on the weather.

Term 2 Week 5 Email... TWALK!

Hi guys

TWALK! This weekend! I'm so excited... in fact I think a lot of us are. This week's meeting is in the Shelley Common Room, at the top of the stairs in the UCSA (other end of the corridor from our normal room), 7:30pm, and it's going to be all about TWALK. The rules, what to bring, all those last minutes sign-ups, costume planning... important stuff, make sure you're in the know. If you're doing TWALK, be there and bring your whole team along too. If you're thinking about doing TWALK but need a team, come along and we can match you up with teams that are looking for teammates. If you want to help out behind the scenes or be part of the cooking team, you can still put your name forward for that too.

Entries for TWALK close after tomorrow's meeting and no late entries will be accepted. You can sign your team up online now and save yourself trying to sort it out tomorrow night, http://www.cutc.org.nz/twalk. You can also find out a bit more about TWALK there.

Message from Lindsey: Only a few more weeks left before the best TROG of the 2nd semester is announced. I've only had a couple so far so anyone who sends me something has got a very good chance of winning a Deuter 22L daypack ($170). This prize will be given out on the 3rd June so get your TROGs to me at trog@cutc.org.nz. I know you've all been on some great trips, including ice climbing, so it'd be great to get these all written down for future trampers. Send me pictures too! See the previous newsletter for last semester's winner to get an idea about what to write for a TROG.

Avalanche and Alpine Education Evening brought to you by Mountain Safety Council. (We're going to have an avalanche talk at the last meeting of term, but if you can't make it or want more avalanche info here's an event for you)

Where: The Twisted Hop, 6 Poplar Street, Lichfield Lanes, Christchurch
When: 2 dates, either Wednesday 9 June or Wednesday 23 June
Time: 7.30 pm
Entry: $5

Tickets available from Mountain Designs or Bivouac – a limited number will be available at the door.

Right, that's all from me this week... this week's trip: TWALK, bus trip, mystery location, overnight, camping at the Hash House with cooked meals, 24-hours of clue-finding, adventure, running around... See you there!
