Where: Fox and Franz Joseph Glaciers
When: 26th/27th September
Cost: $50
After a successful weekend last year the annual ice climbing trip is back! If you haven’t been to the west coast glaciers yet they are one of the NZ must dos and while most people are content just to go look at them we prefer to get a bit closer. This is where being in the CUTC really pays off, the glacier guides offer a similar experience but if you have to ask you probably can’t afford it. We will walk up onto the foot of the glacial ice and then lower you down into a crevasse and you get to climb back out. The club will provide all the climbing gear and no previous climbing experience is necessary. We will have you on top rope which means even if you ‘fall’ you won’t go anywhere. Places will be limited based on the amount of ‘instructors’ (if the Department of Labor asks we don’t do instruction here) I can convince to come along so priority will be given to people who went on snowcraft, can convince me they have mad cramponing skillz or come up with the best bribes.

Where: Ceadr Flats
When: 10th/11th October
Cost: $30
This is a new one for our instruction calendar, but doesn’t everyone like the idea of being able to float back to the car on Sunday? After a less then successful first attempt I think we need to get craftier in our raft building. So the plan is to split up into teams and each build an exciting and original raft on Saturday night/Sunday morning after a not to long walk in. Then race our rafts down river back to the car on Sunday. With prizes for the best looking raft, the most buoyant raft and of course first raft back to the road end. The rules will allow any construction materials you like to be carried in with you, but bonus points will be awarded for use of materials you can find in the bush (I don’t know what good these will do you but Ill be impressed anyway). You may ask what if our rafts are a complete disaster. Well did I mention there will be hot pools? Also to keep things interesting from start to finish I thought we could try a smorgasbord concept for dinner where everyone makes/brings something and we all share a giant meal.
