wpe1.jpg (9632 bytes)Shags! It’s that time of the month again. I’m feeling the pain of a bloody long walk into Mount Aspiring – but it was worth it. In fact I’m looking forward to the chance to do it all over again. Once a month I try to do a long tramp, and go on day tramps in the weekend’s in-between. This way I am able to get around my 32 hours of lectures a week and enjoy the outdoors – no excuses here for getting the time of my life! This term is the heart of winter – which means the club will get you pups up on the slopes and teach you a few essentials about winter tramping. It is important that you all join in on the Snowcraft trips, as these are very important for the safe enjoyment of the outdoors during the chill!

This term we have the most important event of all – the BushBall baby! This is the Rock your pants off tramping occasion of the year. This includes bugger-all tramping, shit-loads of drinking, loud music and the coveted toilet seat award – Yeah Baby!!! The location is a mystery (in other words we haven’t found a venue) and theme of the ball will be told to you well in advance (we haven’t decided) – but it’s generally a ‘strictly no tramping items’ kind of affair in a wicked little shagadillic shack! So what else is rolling off the calendar this term then – there is Rubber Chicken Man’s ‘Rubber Chicken’ events which include such woobly events as moonlighting across the Craigieburn ranges. He also has planned some other crazed events for you pups – so keep coming to the meetings and we’ll keep you all posted.

The gear locker has been used extensively over the last few snowfalls, I had to use wooden ice-axes on the last trip! It is good that the gear is being used but it also means that it is very important you return it promptly, so please do so straight after the weekend. We will ‘push the pants’ for stories of tramps away over this term as the time for the annual TROG (Trips Log) is firing near and we have all of about one story on file (big database baby and one ain’t filling it!). Send a copy onto Stewart or give them to me at the Wednesday meetings. Either way let me know as it is important that I have you registered for the Drinking System and Mag Light that we will give away for your stories. Oh and don’t forget every entry receives a free King-size bar of Cadbury chocolate – so give ‘em to me baby!

The last term went off very well indeed. It was sad to see a few friendly regular faces like Heidi and ‘Yohannas’ leave the club back to Norway; their active support and lively characters will be missed by many I am sure, you guys will be fondly remembered. The cake competition was a real sting – I am sure that this year had to have been the biggest and best turn-out in the history of the tramping club – to get eighteen awesome entries is really special – thankyou to all who committed the time and effort. Oh and a special ‘love ya long time’ to Cindy and Tina for the hotpools cake – Rock On! Also a special certified ‘arsehole’ award has to fly out to Clare Scott for burning our intestines out baby – you got me there buddy but ‘love ya long-time’ too! Oh I also want to shout it out (too much Mai FM I think – but what a station eh?!) for all my pups who contributed to making this club such a positive and lively one – big cheers to Jonno and Shenaynay, Rene B, Daz, Jeanie, Simon and all the crew in the fridge! To the clan – thanks for your support.

So where are we going this term in the way of trips? To the Arthurs, Lewis and West Coast are some. I also want to get longer trips away to the beautiful Catlins area in the rugged South East of Southland and another around Ohau/Mt Cook. The weekends will have wicked, easy and hard day-trips as well as the great night-and-a-day along with the more traditional two dayers. I am open for suggestions on the fly so if any of you pups have suggestions then e-mail me or preferably tell the big possum in person. I want more hotpools, so we’ll plan trips for Hurunui and Otehake, Maruia, Hanmer and Sylvia – ain’t nothing better than getting hot and steamy during winter! What’s the ‘real deal’ about Daz and Lena then hey guys – just in case no one knows yet, these two lovebirds are ‘on the wings baby’ if you get my drift! I guess that classified ad. really did work – judging by the amount of replies I got it looks like these two will be a good match. I’ll throw a couple of the replies in for you guys to read – at least you can understand yourself the demand this Stallion had on him. For a complete U turn how about I mention what will be happening on the Wednesday’s of term three. On the other hand how about I don’t. I will tell you about the photo competition this term though – this has categories such as best landscape, individual, group, slide, action and ‘special’. Bring in your entries as there will be some wicked prizes for winners of the categories since I love to give stuff away, and they can be from any month or year folks! Oh and ‘wicked’ can mean anything from downright naughty to hilarious! Every Wednesday will have a social focus, we’ll have another ‘wine and cheese’ evening and plenty more ‘shagadillic action’ designed for you by the gals and lads of the social team. After most Wednesday meetings it tends to be a habit of mine and many others to head down to the local watering hole – so come along, pull up a pew and join us as we rant and rave at the Foundry. Also, while you’re buying that beer remember to tell big Attah you’re from the Tramping Club and it’ll go to our free beer at the end of the year – so drink up baby because Rene’s thirsty!

Remember guys, it’s the half year turning point now – if you haven’t done much to date then it’s not too late on making this year one of your most memorable. Getting about in the outdoors is all about getting a high on nature’s beauty and enjoying friendship and companionship. I can’t stress enough the importance of getting away regularly from the grind of student life and maximising your adventures. Get fit over winter as you’ll need to be to enjoy the outdoors at this time of year. The days are often short with the hours of light they give, which can mean a more demanding pace to reach your destinations. So make it easy on yourself and others and ensure you are fit and sign up on trips that match your personal level. Remember we have some totally wicked experiences to be had this term – such as the moonlight traverse over the Craigieburns in the snow. So get out there and experience them with us – I’ll be seeing you in the Alps.

Rene Artz.
