Hey gang,
What's kicking on this fine Tuesday? Hope you all found something neat to do
on the weekend... climbing pine trees with ice tools and getting told off my
church ministers anyone?
As for this past weekend bushcrafting...There was a bridge like none I've
seen before (think no. 8 wire used as twisty-ties on rotten planks),
matagouri (and bushlawyer and wildroses and gorse), spring rolls (Dave
either needs an MRI or a medal) and horizontal sleet (this is a shoutout to
the girls of Team Sexier-Than-Ivor). As Shannon put it "CUTC vs. Broken
River. We survived so I guess we won"...which pretty much sums it up. Don't
hold back, there is SO much to be TROGed about (I won't even be mad if it
includes some of Saturday night's goon induced dialogue).
Speaking of TROG...Last term it was a 400g down sleeping bag, this term the
wonderful folk at R&R
Sport<http://www.rrsport.co.nz/index.php/ps_alias/store/pi_storeid/6>in
town have rather generously given us a tidy wee ProLite Thermarest
(with
a retail value of $219) to pass on to the writer of the best TROG article of
term 3. These self-inflating-luxury-things beat the hell out of the
hard-blue-foamy-things in terms of comfort and insulation, and this one will
fit inside your pack too. If you're new to the club, TROG is like our
yearbook - a compilation of stories, photographs, drawings and everything
else we can publish! So during or after a trip, write down your thoughts and
experiences (points for humour) and pass them on to Kieran at
trog at cutc.org.nz.
We've got a really, really important conservation meeting this week. Ben
Robson will be giving an informal presentation on the threat that
hydro-electric power poses to outdoor recreation in New Zealand. West Coast
Regional Council chief executive Chris Ingle is putting forward the idea of
the West Coast being a 'powerhouse' for New Zealand, damning a number of
totally priceless waterways. If Ingle is able to persuade those in power
then we may lose some/all of our rights to be heard through the current
channels. It doesn't matter if you're not a kiwi - if you love the outdoors,
care about our planet and believe in democracy you need to take note - come
along and get fired up!
Coming up this weekend is snow craft! If you've signed up and haven't gotten
an email, we have failed to decipher your email address. If you want to get
the emails flick a request to Dave <smeg_2 at hotmail.com> and make sure you
come to the meeting tomorrow night.
Don't worry if snow crafting isn't your thing - there are other trips to go
on, and this week we'll be welcoming back our dear German friend and regular
trips officer, Herr Volker. If there's somewhere in particular you want to
go, or if you want to organize a trip, let him know <trips at cutc.org.nz> and
he'll help you out.
Ahh, and one more thing for the meeting tomorrow. You can sign up and pay
for our extravagantly amazing trip that is bushball (see this term's
newsletter for details). If you only go on one trip this year with the club,
make it bushball and bust out the DISCOOOOOO!
Whew, long one this week.
Be there tomorrow night!
Giselle and Brian
P.S As you may have heard, if you've been harbouring gear from the gear
locker for more than 45 days, your deposit will be banked this week if you
don't return the items ASAP! If you need a piece of equipment for that many
consecutive weeks, you should probably just buy it - remember your CUTC
membership card gets you great discounts at most of the outdoors stores in
Christchurch.
