Hey tramps - those seasoned and those budding!
Saw a number of you today while sitting at the CUTC table flashing grins and
wooing potential members. Good stuff! I'd like to welcome all today's
tenderfooted newcomers to the club, but that might have to wait officially
until tomorrow night - Jo's fingers will be flying trying to get everyone
into the database as soon as possible which is no easy task!
This Wednesday we'll have a quick overview of the club for our new trampers
as well as information on the upcoming bushcraft and snowcraft courses.
Tomorrow night is also your chance to sign up for our semester two
(re)freshers trip this weekend, think of it as pre-gaming for
bushball...We'll be going to Otehake - a nice easy walk up the river (which
makes carrying 1.5 litres of Mountain Thunder more acceptable) or the option
of a really hard route (we're talking a 12 hour day, alpine terrain and lots
of snow and bushbashing) if you've got the skills and feel so inclined. Did
I mention that this trip features natural hot springs and that they might be
the reason why we find any excuse to go there? Hmm.
To top it all off we'll have another charming trips presentation from Mr.
Ivor Heijnen, which those of you who were there last week will be able to
vouch for as unmissable. Don't know if Volker would agree,
but...umm...Anyway, see below for an announcement from Tom!

*Skills Evenings:*
Contrary to advertised in the newsletter the first of the 'Skills Evenings'
will be Monday 27th July. The topic is basic navigation. We will cover: grid
references, bearings/compasses, maps, map symbols, scales, Norths, magnetic
variation, contours, routes/route planning etc. We will meet at 7pm in a
location yet to be confirmed - but on or near campus! Bring a compass and
map if you own one (don't worry if you don't) and pen and paper. Please
email me (email.tomalton at gmail.com) or sign-up on the sheet at the meeting
this Wednesday if you'd like to come. Please feel free to email or find me
at the meeting if you have any questions.
