Freshers' Weekend Information

So it seems a few people are signed up this year! Here is the important
juicy information about where and when to meet and what to bring. Since the
gear locker was not opened today when it should have been it will be open
at 11am tomorrow (Friday the 6th March). So if you need some gear listed
below, feel free to come along with you deposit and see Hamish.

Weather:

The weather is looking ok for the weekend. But as always bring a raincoat
just in case! See all the details for yourself at metvuw.com

When:

8:30am Saturday the 7 th till approx 6pm on the 8 th of March.

Where:

Meet at the UCSA carpark - we will leave without you if your not there by
8:45!

How:

We will travel by party bus. Meet in the ucsa carpark at 8:30am on Saturday
the 7 th of March.

What to bring:

Clothing and footwear

Boots, although lightweight running shoes are suitable for this tramp.

Thick socks (wool or polypro). 2 pairs if you can.
Shorts and underclothes (quick drying synthetics like nylon).
Long johns or trousers (stripey and pink works well)

T-shirt (wool or polypro).
Another top (wool or polypro).
Jersey (wool or polypro).
Warm jacket (Wool or down, or polyester fleece).
Waterproof raincoat (and if you have them over-trousers).
Gloves

Hat (wool or polypro). A balaclava will get extra style points.

Sunhat/sunglasses.
A change of clothes to wear around the campsite. These should also be
lightweight and made out of nylon, wool and polypro.

Avoid cotton and denim clothes as they soak up water, and become heavy and
cold. If you wear jeans, or don’t have the right equipment, for safety
reasons you will probably be left behind in the car park.

Remember two layers of clothing are better than one very thick one. Since
we are doing river crossing training afterwards you might want to take a
small bay with some dry clothes to change into afterwards. This can be left
in the bus.

Personal equipment

Pack with shoulder straps and a waistband.
Waterproof pack liner (or a bin liner bag or lots of plastic bags)

Sleeping bag of good quality. Down is usually best.
Sleeping mat.

Plate and mug.
Spoon, fork, knife (spoon and pocket knife may do).
Pocket knife if you have one.
Plastic bag for rubbish.
Toilet gear

Suntan lotion/Insect repellent.
Torch - ideally a headlamp (and spare batteries).
Toilet paper.
Water bottle.

Food

We are providing the evening meal on Saturday, and a BBQ on Sunday after
the river crossing training. So you must bring snacks, breakfast and two
lunches. We will boil water for breakfast on Sunday. And have tea!

Lunch for Saturday - eg bread/bagels/pita, cheese, peanut butter, tuna with
an easy open can

Breakfast for Sunday morning. Remember milk powder if you want cereal!
Lunch for Sunday - remember we will have a BBQ in the afternoon tho
Snacks - scroggin/chocolate muesli bars....

Things to think about with your food:

Remove unnecessary packaging.
Think about the weight - liquids are heavy!

Avoid cans.

Group Equipment - TENT

An essential bit of kit when camping is the tent, we have a few left in the
gear locker but if you have a tent please bring it! Talk to our gear locker
officers about the availability of the remaining tents, we will need all
the tents to be filled up so we may arbitrarily put people in groups.

If you know a few people in the club it would be great if you could hire a
tent together. A few places in town hire and/or sell tents.

R & R have offered a special deal on a new 2 man tent for CUTC members
today and tomorrow so if you are thinking of buying one, this is a great
opportunity.

FREEDOM SEQUAL 2 PERSON TENT

Ok that is one epic email, hopefully that's enough details! Should cover
most things!
Key points would be:

the gear locker is open tomorrow at 11am, this is the LAST chance to get
stuff out of the gear locker.
if you have a tent - please bring it

If you know a few people going this weekend, it would be great to organize
a tent for yourselves! If you don't know anyone, don't worry we will work
things out and allocate people to tents on Saturday

If you have any questions, throw them on the forum so everyone can see the
answers...
See you all on Saturday morning!
Brian
