 Hey trampers,

Awesome to see so many of you made the most of the weekend's optimal weather
(and your shiny new gear from R&R) and got your tramp on. Bet there're some
stories to be told, so forget your work and bust out the TROG reports
instead. Send your pictures, tales, anecdotes, recipes, cartoons and
thoughts to our newly elected TROG editor Kieran (trog at cutc.org.nz ) or keep
posting them on the forum <http://www.cutc.org.nz/forum>.

This week at the meeting we've got Aarn Tate from Aarn Design in to talk to
us on the science of load carrying, you might have seen some of his packs at
the gear sale last week. Good stuff! So don't miss it, and be there to sign
up for trips afterwards.

Your captains,
G & B

*Otehake Hotpools
Tramping
Arthurs Pass
Tom AltonOvernighter (camping)
A classic CUTC trip! There are several possible routes to the Otehake Hot
Pools. One begins up the Taramakau valley then follows the track past the
pitoresque Lake Kaurapataka. From there, a short section of track leads to
the Otehake River, which is followed up to the hot Pools. A second group
could take a 'hard' route, approaching the Otehake via Mt Pfeifer if
desired!
Mingha-Deception
Tramping
Arthurs Pass

Overnighter (hut)
A classic 2 day (5-7 hrs a day) crossing of the Main Divide over Goat Pass
parallel to Arthurs Pass. The Mingha-Deception route forms the run leg of
New Zealand’s most iconic multi-sport race—the Coast to Coast. It is not
uncommon in spring and summer to come across people training for the event,
running from west to east.
Mingha-Deception
Running
Arthurs Pass
tba
Daytrip
Experience the mountain running section of the annual Coast-to-Coast race
yourself by running the Mingha-Deception crossing in a day. Starting at the
Deception side it takes 4-7 hrs to complete the challenging, largely
untracked West to East crossing.
Mt. Alexander
Tramping
Arthurs Pass
Volker Nock
Overnighter (camping)
Mt Alexander can be climbed as a moderately hard weekend trip via Camp
Creek. A high camp at some pleasant tarns is usually necessary, providing
stunning views over the West Coast and Taramakau valley.
Mt. Richardson
Tramping
Canterbury Foothills
tba
Daytrip
Starting at the Glentui Picnic Area, this moderate to steep track climbs
first through tawhai forest and then through tussock grasslands and
Dracophyllum scrub on the upper slopes of Mt Richardson (1047 metres). At
the top you get great views of the Puketeraki and Torlesse ranges one side,
and across the Canterbury Plains on the other. A loop can be formed by
descending via Blowhard Track.
