Hey trampers,
Hope you're having a splendid Tuesday, all the post-weekend photos that are
popping up on Facebook are a great distraction as usual. The weather has
sure been treating us nicely lately, so we've got to make the most of it
before our luck runs out and the winter sets in!
No doubt most of you are rejoicing the fact that it's the last week of term.
You had better have some properly epic missions planned for the three week
break or I'll be thoroughly disappointed in you! Regular club trips and
meetings don't run during the holidays, but if you need some inspiration
Volker's got plenty of suggestions and there'll be people keen for an
informal pint and catch up on Wednesday nights too. Don't forget about the
forum <http://www.cutc.org.nz/forum> either, 'cause that's the best way to
keep in touch with the club during breaks if you're looking to organise a
trip, find somewhere to go or make people jealous with your superiorly
intrepid tales.
Now I know how upset you were about the lack of chocolate at the meeting
last week, so we're going to make it up to you tomorrow. Promise. The social
officers tell me it involves blue liquid, balloons and tangling yourself in
knots with other people. There'll be 10 stations set up with different
activities and you'll compete in teams of eight to complete the tasks better
than everyone else with prizes (generously donated by Bivouac and R&R -
trust me, they are awesome) up for grabs. You don't need to bring anything
or wear a costume (although we do heartily encourage that sort of behaviour)
and we'll be starting and finishing upstairs in the UCSA, meeting at 7:30 as
usual.
We'll also be having the prize giving for this term's best TROG article (and
all the fame and glory that goes along with it) - just so you know Kieran
wasn't kidding. Thanks to Macpac, the prize is now worth $70...incentive
much?
If you haven't written a TROG article yet (oh no!) there's still time to
bash one out and send it to trog at cutc.org.nz and get yourself in the
running. It doesn't have to be a page-long affair...Haiku anyone?
Looking forward to some good old fashioned CUTC bonding,
Giselle and Brian

Daytrip
Waimak Col
Tramping
Arthurs Pass
Volker
Overnight (hut/camping)
The unmarked route over Waimakariri Col to Rolleston River is a rugged two
(to three) day alpine tramp. The upper Waimakariri valley and the Rolleston
valley are rugged and involve steep, bouldery descents and steep sidling
through scrub, scree and across avalanche chutes. There can be snow
year-round on Waimakariri Col, so alpine skills are essential. You can reach
Waimakariri Falls Hut in an easy day trip from Carrington Hut. The area
around Waimakariri Falls Hut has spectacular waterfalls, rock faces and
superb views. In summer, alpine flowers bloom in the basins. Because of
avalanche danger, it is not a suitable trip for winter or early spring.
Mt. Philistine - Waimak Col Traverse
Tramping/Mountaineering
Arthurs Pass
Laura
Overnight
Combine the climb up Mt Philistine with a traverse along the exposed and
loose ridge to reach Waimak Col. From here a descend is possible either via
Waimak Falls to Klondyke corner or the Rolleston Valley.
Mueller Hut
Tramping
Mt. Cook NP

Overnight (hut)
Climb high above Mt Cook village to spend the night in Mueller hut. Enjoy
the fabulous sunset and sunrise over Mt Cook and the glaciers and watch Mt
Sefton fall apart. Mueller Hut offers the most spectacular views you may
ever find after just three hours tramping! It will take you four hour
driving from Christchurch though, and the very comfortable hut will set you
back a bit (Annual Passes not accepted unfortunately).
Devilskin Saddle
Tramping
Lewis Pass
Daniel
Overnight (hut)
Venture up beautiful Nina Valley towards the new Nina hut and from here
climb towards Devilskin saddle and the brand new Biv. From the saddle either
drop down the other side into the Hopeful valley and back out to the road or
head over the Sylvia tops and a pleasant bush-bash back to the start of the
Nina valley track.
