Hey gang,
The meteorological build up to last weekend was decidedly average but boy
did it pull through! Mueller Hut (or the fraction of it that was showing)
looked brilliant and (if I may say so myself) frolicking around
Hawdon/Sudden Valley with Orange Fronted Parakeets watching grasshoppers
getting frisky comes as a highly recommended way to spend a Sunday.
And so concludes our club trips for the year, but the tramping doesn't stop
here, folks! The weather is still on the up and up, the days getting balmy
and long and the hills looking more enticing than ever from the 5th floor of
the library. We understand that you may experience CUTC withdrawal symptoms,
but there are ways to cope and fortunately the internet can be your best
friend during this tough time (and every other time...right?)
- Hopefully in your time in the club you've met some good people you can
get out with over the summer, but even if you've been anti-social all is not
lost because we've got forums <http://www.cutc.org.nz/forums> where you
can advertise/beg for trips or car seats.
- Our trips database <http://www.cutc.org.nz/tripview.php> is there to be
used too, if you suffer without Volker's weekly wisdom and guidance and need
ideas for tramps.
- If you're feeling more intrepid, definitely take a look at Andrew
Burglass' remote huts <http://www.remotehuts.co.nz/> website if you
haven't done so already
- When you're planning your own trips don't forget to check the WEATHER!
Bookmark these websites: here <http://www.avalanche.net.nz/> for
avalanche danger, metvuw <http://www.metvuw.com/> for rain radar, and the
metservice<http://www.metservice.co.nz/public/weatherToday/mountain.html>for
mountain forecasts.
- You can access and print your own topomaps from
here<http://library.canterbury.ac.nz/systems/w3launch/topomap.w3l>(but
only through university computers)
By the way, congratulations on the helicopter ride, Dave.
So, we're going out with a bang tomorrow night. Think of our last meeting as
a mullet - business at the front, party at the back. While we've got plenty
of hilarity in store, we can't ignore the fact that this is also an AGM
(which might provide a portion of the hilarity)! If you've got your eye on a
committee position for next year (even if you're not quite sure), make sure
you come to the meeting half an hour early (that's 7pm) so we can discuss
the nominees and have the serious part of the meeting flow quickly and
smoothly. You can read over the committee job descriptions
here<http://www.cutc.org.nz/jobs.php>and as always, feel free to ask
any questions!
Once that's out of the way we'll be on to the more crucially important event
- prizegiving. In advance, let us say thank you to those who did stupid,
embarrassing or inappropriate things during the course of the year. We owe
you. And by that we mean, we're going to show bad photos of you, tell
everyone what you did and then give you small material/gastronomic
compensation. So, who's nervous!
Don't forget, we're running closer and closer to the TROG deadline now, so
before you get bogged down with exams/leave the country, write a trip
report, doodle a cartoon, sort through your photos and send it all to Kieran
at trog at cutc.org.nz and if you do, we'll end up with the mightiest and most
memorable yearbook yet. And if you don't, we can't send a copy to the Otago
Uni Tramping Club and brag about it.
Also, if you have *outstanding gear *return it to the locker this week or
there's a good chance you won't get your deposit back. Our gear boys have
exams and will not be happy if they have to chase you down or open the
locker for every rag-tag rapscallion that asks. In fact, they'll be angry,
so fair warning to you.
Anyhow, it's been a hell of a year, chaps and gals. Many hurrahs to all of
you for getting in there/out there and making it terrific in the process,
and to all the committee members for donating their time/sanity to keep the
club on its feet.
A bittersweet farewell to CUTC 2009 from us here on the
Tuesday-email-writing-extreme-team.
Over and out...
