Hey trampers,
Hope you had a good weekend. The Hurunui hotpools looked terrific, although
I guess there were a few sandflies, huh? I know there were a few other trips
going away as well - don't forget to TROG about them all! I particularly
want to know how Volker's underpants got left behind.
David Hewson from Environment Canterbury is coming in tomorrow night to talk
about the often-ignored environmental scrouge that are invasive pine trees.
Learn about wilding pines, what they do to the high country environment and
what to do when you see one (shoot 'em right between the eyes)!
This weekend you have the option of going ice climbing! It was a hit last
year. Places are limited though, and you need to have been on a prior
snowcraft course so we know you can handle the ice (the skating rink doesn't
count). The plan is to leave on Friday evening, 'cause it's right over on
the West Coast and then return on Sunday night. With a bit of luck you'll
climb on both Franz Josef and Fox. Be at the meeting for more details and
sign up.
If you've put your name down for a t-shirt but haven't paid (or if you want
to put your name down) remember to bring $20 to the meeting so you can get
kitted out all snazzy-like. Everyone one knows that trampers have fantastic
fashion sense, so prove it with one of these. Hopefully we'll have some
sizes for you to try on this week.
See you at the meeting!
G-slug and Brian

Trips this weekend:*
*Mt Bealy (daytrip)
*Mt. Bealy lies directly west from Arthurs Pass and the town can be seen
from the trail. Bealey is not glaciated but rather is on the south end of a
ridge running southeast from Mt. Rolleston.
Mt Somers (Tramp, Moderate, overnight hut) Coordinator: LindseyA very scenic
track leads from Sharplin Falls carpark up to Pinnacles hut. The hut is very
comfortable and has great views of the nearby Pinnacles, amazing columnar
rock formations and back down the Canterbury plains. Alternatively, head
over the summit on the way in for some great views.
Glaciers - Ice Climbing (Instruction, overnight) Co-ordinator: DaveHead over
to the West Coast's Franz Josef and Fox glaciers for some ice climbing and
glacier walking.
*...or where-ever you feel like going!*
