Hey there trampers

First up, we're meeting in *Bentley's Wing* from now on, which is above the
Foundry at the UCSA - go up the stairs. We'll have signs pointing the way so
don't worry about getting lost, see you there *Wednesday at 7:30pm*, and
this email will tell you what we'll be up to then. We will also be at R&R
Sport on Thursday night for the *CUTC R&R Buy Night*, more details at the
bottom of this email and in the newsletter.

We hope everyone who came on Freshers had a great time! For many of you it
was an introduction to New Zealand tramping or overnight tramping, but
everyone stepped up to the challenge and all the different trips went well.
In fact, everything went really smoothly.

Just kidding on that last point. We sincerely apologise for all the problems
we had with the buses, it really concerned all those on the committee, we
have sent a letter of complaint to the bus company for
unsafe/unprofessional/illegal conduct and let them know we will not be using
their service again without major internal changes, we have also voiced our
concerns to the UCSA and we are discussing how we will proceed from here.
Know that we are treating this as a serious matter. Also Dave is sorry about
wait on the rice, turns out it's not such easy stuff to cook for a hundred
people... but when you've got a three course meal who really cares about the
main course, right?

We will be holding a *Freshers Lost and Found* on Wednesday evening so if
you lost something send an email off to captain at cutc.org.nz or yell out on
the night, if you found something bring it along to the meeting.* If you
have something from the gear locker, please return it on Wednesday evening,
note that it must be in a clean and dry condition.* (That means that if
you've got a tent, it should probably be hanging on your line at some
stage...)

Onto this week's meeting... we have a few things planned for Wednesday
night:

-First up, a *slideshow of Freshers* - with so many different trips
happening in one place (and so much going on in the darkness or secluded
water holes...) we're going to put together the highlights of everyone's
photo collections for all to see and to bring anyone up to speed who wasn't
able to come along. If you put any Freshers photos on Facebook, don't be
surprised if we want to borrow some for the night... or you can email us
your best photos to captain at cutc.org.nz

-Secondly, *our half-AGM*! We have a few constitution changes that got
updated last year and need to go through the official processes. This
shouldn't take too long and we're not on the hunt for new committee members
right now so don't be too worried (although if anyone out there has
experience with TWALK and wants to help set it up this year... talk to us!)

-Thirdly, a *gear trade*! The idea behind this is that everyone who has
unwanted but usable gear can bring it along to sell/trade/give it to other
members, so have a hunt through your cupboard and see if you've got anything
to bring, and bring some cash if you might want to buy something. Tom is
organising the trade and has this to add about it:

"Now you've had a chance to get a taste of what gear is required for
tramping come along and see if you can pick up a bargain. Or if you've
realised you want to 'upgrade' a piece of kit, why not give/sell it to
someone else? Or if you're a seasoned tramper with a whole room full of
gear, half of which never gets used, why not try and de-clutter a
little? Either way bring along any unwanted gear and or some cash/beer and
see if you can strike a deal with someone! There's not going to be a formal
auction, just spread your stuff on the table and see who's interested.
Personally I've got some knackered boots to give away and a surplus warm
hat. But I'd really like a cheap/old ski-touring set-up or parts thereof.
You get the idea!"

-Finally, our *trips* for the weekend! We've already had lots of enquiries
about these trips, great to see such enthusiasm after Freshers! So below are
our suggested trips for the weekend, but please note that these are subject
to have people interested in organising and going along on them on Wednesday
night. We have a pretty flexible system, so if you can only go on a Saturday
or a Sunday or have a specific trip in mind, chances are we can make it
happen if we can find the people. It is highly likely there will also be a
harder trip going away as well as these listed trips.

*Little Mt Peel* Difficulty: Easy-Medium

Daytrip, 4-6 hours return

The Deer Spur Track is a steep well formed route that exits the bush line at
approx 900m before continuing on to the summit of Little Mt Peel at 1308m.
The poled route via Emily Saddle is somewhat more difficult, but makes a
nice circuit. There is a small hut just below the summit.

*Lake Daniels* Difficulty: Easy

Daytrip/Overnight, 2-3 hours each way

This is a good introductory overnight tramp to a hut situated by a large
lake and surrounded by attractive beech forests. Track starts at Marble
Hill. Thompson Flat, to the north of the lake, can be explored as a
side-trip.

*Wharfedale Track* Difficulty: Easy-Medium

Overnight

This track was originally developed as a road link between the plains and
Lees Valley. Work began in 1879 and in seven years £4,537 (about $500,000
equivalent today) had been spent before it was abandoned. This long, easy
graded track was used as a stock route in the 1890s and now provides access
for trampers.

*Mt Aicken *Difficulty: Medium-Hard

Daytrip, 6-7 hours return

A steady ascent through bush and later open tus- sock. Leads to a ridge
crest with with spectacular views. The true summit (1858m) is a 500m
scramble east of the main ridge.

So that's the meeting summed up... but wait, we've also got the *CUTC **R&R
Buy Night* happening this *Thursday, 11 March at 6-9pm*. There's going to be
at least 20% off everything in store (or at least everything that's not a
kayak, bike or Meindl), and there will be a door prize drawn at 7pm. The
shop has moved to a new location from last year and it's looking good, it's
now on the corner of Columbo and Tuam Streets.

Wow, that was another long email, hope you got all that! See you at the
meeting, remember 7:30pm Wednesday night, Bentley's Wing. We should also
have newsletters there for those of you who missed out to grab.

Your Captains

Jo and Dave
