Hey there trampers
This Wednesday night several members of our committee will be talking about
the tramping-related activities that they've been up to in the last little
while, these meetings always seem to result in some pretty epic stories, so
come along to be inspired... or at least entertained! (We're shuffling this
term's meetings around a bit, next week will be a social meeting and the
last week of term an environmental meeting.)
Jane and Kieran, our environmental officers, have organised for the Club to
join in an ECan (Environment Canterbury) pine pulling trip this weekend.
Come to the meeting for more information about wilding pines and to sign up
for the Saturday trip to help restore New Zealand's native bush.
Other weekend trips include a daytrip to Mt Oxford and an overnight trip to
Edwards Valley, at the meeting we can also plan a harder trip and other
trips, our Trips Officer Dan will give you the details.
Another reminder from your TROG editor... Don't forget to send me something
about your trips so I can put it into TROG - I still haven't had anything
from Freshers, so get writing and send me some photos to go with it. I'd
prefer not to take the photos from facebook because the quality isn't as
good, but if I have to then I will! I also want to hear about what you all
got up to at the weekend - Mt Aicken, Carrington Hut, Carrinton Hut/Harman
Pass/Kelly Range etc etc, make sure you jot something down and send to
trog at cutc.org.nz. It doesn't have to be an individual effort either! And for
those of you that have the TROG books (Andrew and Brian), can you bring
those to the meeting on Wed so I can give them to another group for this
weekend. The *PRIZE* for the best TROG for this semester is a *$170 Black
Diamond rechargeable headtorch*.... I also want some of your stories to make
it into the newletter, so the best ones will be sent to Tiffany (the
newsletter editor). Get trogging.....
See you tomorrow night! Remember, *7:30p**m Bentley's Wing, upstairs UCSA
above the Foundry*. By the way, if you know anyone who should be getting
these emails and isn't, let us know about it and we'll get their email
address fixed.
Your Captains
Dave and Jo
*Trips:*
*Mt Oxford, *
Easy-Medium Daytrip (5-7 hours return)
Start from Ryde Falls Track, cross the west branch of Coopers Creek and
climb gradually through scattered pockets of beech forest, and then more
steeply through snow tussock. From the summit of Mt Oxford (1364 metres)
there are good views.
*Pine tree pulling*
Easy Daytrip
Our resident environmental officer, Jane, will lead you on an Ecan
(Environment Canterbury) Pine tree pulling mission to help restore NZ's
native bush.
*
Edwards Valley*
Easy-Medium Overnight (5+ hours)
A mix of track and riverbed travel makes for a Great up and back trip
through one of the many valleys in Arthurs pass. Glimpses of a spectacular
waterfall can be seen as the track climbs steeply to avoid the gorge. It is
possible to return via williams saddle making more of a loop.
