Hi guys and gals
This week's email just kept growing and growing, hope you can hunt your way
through it! Speaking of hunting your way through things, come along to
tomorrow night's meeting for *a treasure hunt*. Yep that's right, a treasure
hunt! Our social officer Shannon will be leading you on a short trip around
the UCSA (and by the sounds of it, potentially some rather odd areas of the
wider campus), in search of some rather odd things, *there will be a grand
prize*! You should bring your *compasses and headlamps/torches*... This is
your chance to get your compass and cryptic clue reading practice in before
TWALK next term (a few people have been asking what TWALK is... TWALK is our
annual Twenty-Four Hour Walk, it's like orienteering with strange clues and
costumes, it's epic and you should definitely do it... more info next term).
We will be covering all the normal info first then whoever wants to join our
wee treasure hunt can stay afterwards. Trips for this week include the
ever-popular Avalanche Peak in Arthur's Pass, trips info is at the bottom of
this email.
If you find yourself a bit lost on Wednesday and think you need a bit more
help with the navigation skills, don't worry, Tom's got it sorted, and has
this message for you: It appears even some of the committee aren't certain
of their navigation! So: *Skills evenings are back!* First one - *Monday
29th March 7.00pm*. Navigation, including grid refs, bearings, magnetic
variation, pacing. Email: *email.tomalton at gmail.com*<email.tomalton at gmail.com>
* to reserve a place*. First come, first serve. Places limited. They're
FREE. More dates TBC. Venue TBC.
And now a reminder from Lindsey: *Only 1 week left to get your TROGs to me
before the first prize is given out for the best TROG of the semester!!* I
still haven't had many TROGs so anyone who gets something to me before the
last meeting of term (31st March) has a very good chance of winning a $170
headtorch. I'll be giving this out to the best TROG I've received so far, so
get something to trog at cutc.org.nz for a chance of winning. See the
treasurers table for previous TROG issues for ideas about what to put into a
TROG, but basically it's just about where you went, who you went with, what
it was like....etc etc. I'm still keen for freshers pictures and stories,
and also something from trips that went away this weekend (Mt Oxford, pine
tree pulling and 'not quite' Mt Technical). Get TROGGING!!!
One more thing: As many of you heard in last week’s meeting, 3 CUTC members
are going to be part of the *NZ Oxfam Trailwalker*, a fund raising event
that will take place April 10-11 at Lake Taupo. The goal for each team is to
raise at least $2000 and walk 100kms in 36hrs. The money collected will
support Oxfam’s humanitarian, development, and advocacy work in some of the
world’s poorest countries.
We can only make this happen with your help. The walk is approaching and you
can support us in a number of ways:
- Support crew: Each team participating in the walk will have a group of
people that takes care of them at each of the check points. You would help
us by bringing food, drinks, gear, etc. This is a fun way of being part of
the event without having to do the long walking. The catch with this is you
have to get to Taupo, we have all arranged flights and buses up.
- Donations: If you have a couple of dollars to spare (or know someone
who does), donating is easy and can be done through this link:
http://www.oxfam.org.nz/events/teams.asp?a=show_team_pages&eventid=24&teamid=4072
- Tramps: During the next couple of weekends we are going to be leading
some club trips to train and raise funds. If you want to come on these
tramps you pay the normal cost for petrol plus an extra donation of about
$20 to Oxfam.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Brian, Mariana, Mauricio, and Marlon

Trips:
*Mt Grey/Maukatere
*
*Difficulty: Easy*
*Daytrip, 3 hours or 3-5 hours*
Named after Sir George Grey, Governer of NZ from 1845-79 ...now some useful
information. There are two options: an easy 3 hour return to the summit from
Lake Janet, and the Red Beech Circuit, a 3-5 hr loop through the Red Beech
Forest.
*Avalanche Peak*
*Difficulty: Medium-Hard*
*Daytrip, 5-7 hours return*
One of the most popular day trips in Arthurs Pass. A track leaves from just
behind the AP Visitors Center before climbing through the bush and on to a
poled route through the tussock. The final ridge to the summit is narrow and
loose but the summit itself had commanding views.
*Avalanche Peak via Crow Hut*
*Difficulty: Medium
*
*Overnight, 5-7 hours*
Climb to the summit of Avalanche Peak as above, before dropping down to the
Crow River and Crow Hut. The second day consists of an easy walk down the
Crow River before following the waimak out to SH73
*Mt Thomas *
*Difficulty: Easy
Daytrip, 5-6 hours return*
The wooded gully track climbs through mountain beech and native bush befor
reaching the summit at 1023m. Return via forestry road that later becomes a
track through plantation pine forest.
*Lake Man *
*Difficulty: Medium
Overnight
*
The Lake Man tramping track and route is located in the Lake Sumner Forest
Park. Lake Man is a scenic mountain tarn in a rocky basin. This trip can be
made into a round trip by heading down Pussy Stream and exiting via the Hope
River. Alternatively, the ridge above the Hopeful can be followed back
towards the highway and a descend via an easy bush-bash through the forest.
