[CUTC] Last meeting of term!

Jo Taylor captain at cutc.org.nz
Tue Mar 30 01:31:44 EDT 2010

Hi all you trampers,

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few weeks you've
probably been hearing a few things about mining and National Parks lately,
whether it's on the news or Facebook or at our meetings. As trampers this is
a major issue for all of us, for New Zealanders and for international
students wanting to see and enjoy our environment alike. This Wednesday's
meeting is dedicated to the mining issue, and our guest speaker David Round
will talk about explain a bit about what's going on at the moment and the
law involved, and FMC's response. We will look at the ways we can take
action on the issue and get our voices heard both individually and as a
Club.

David Round lectures natural resource law here at Canterbury. In addition to
having a long-standing involvement with CUTC, he is an executive member of
the Federated Mountain Clubs (FMC), and the FMC of course includes the CUTC
as well as over 80 other tramping and mountaineering clubs. The FMC is one
of the groups behind the 2precious2mine campaign, check out the website for
ongoing information about the mining issue: http://www.2precious2mine.org.nz

This Wednesday is also your chance to organise any trips for the holidays!
We don't run official holiday trips but lots of people will be wanting to do
things so get along and mingle after the meeting so you can make some plans
to make the most of your three weeks break. If your plans a a bit more solid
email them through to Daniel at trips at cutc.org.nz and he can mention it to
everyone. We are running trips on the Easter weekend, including Otehake, one
of the most popular tramps in our club... there are hot pools, enough said.
Also a very good trip to practice safe river crossing on - you get plenty of
opportunity!

We won't be running meetings during the break so our next meeting will be 28
April. Having said that it's just not Wednesday nights without Tramping Club
so informal gatherings of trampers tend to happen regardless... anyone for
hosting a potluck dinner next Wednesday? A good way to keep in touch with
everyone, whether to plan social events or holiday tramps are our forums,
at http://cutc.org.nz/forum/ You should have got details on how to login to
the forums emailed to you when you signed up.

See you at the meeting and have a great break! *As usual, the meeting will
be at 7:30pm in the Bentley's Wing of the UCSA, above the Foundry.*

*
Otehake! (with Otehake: the hard way option)*
*Difficulty: Easy-Medium*
*Overnight, 5-6 hours*
A classic CUTC trip! There are several possible routes to the Otehake Hot
Pools. One begins up the Taramakau Valley then follows the track past the
picturesque Lake Kaurapataka. From there, a short section of track leads to
the Otehake River,
which is followed up to the hot pools. Those looking for a challenge can
approach the Otehake via Mt Pfeifer if desired.

*Mt Bruce Difficulty: Medium*
*Daytrip, 5-7 hours return*
Mt Bruce (1630m) rises sharply above the Lagoon Saddle route. It offers
superb panoramas of Arthurs Pass and the Cragieburns.
*
Pinchgut Hut Difficulty: Easy-Medium*
*Daytrip, 5-7 hours return*
This is a great trip. It begins by traveling up a river with fantastic
swimming holes before climbing up onto a terrace above the river before
continuing to the hut. Return the same way or complete a loop

*Holiday trip suggestions*
If anyone wants to do tramps out of Murchison e.g. the Travers Sabine or one
of the million day
walks<http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/tracks-and-walks/nelson-marlborough/nelson-lakes-area/murchison-day-walks/>,
there will be 50+ UCCC's (UC canoe club) camping in Murchison for the last
week of the holidays - anyone is welcome to come join the party.

*Travers–Sabine* *Hard*

The 80 km Travers–Sabine Circuit reaches deep into the heart of the
mountains of Nelson Lakes National Park. Tranquil beech forests, fields of
waving tussocks, 2000 metre-high mountains and clear rushing streams are
highlights of the journey.

The circuit requires 4–7 days to complete and involves a crossing of Travers
Saddle, an alpine pass subject to freezing conditions at any time of year.

Most of the track is classified as a tramping track. It is well marked and
although most rivers and streams are bridged, after heavy rain there are a
number of streams which may not be safe to cross. Sturdy boots and a good
standard of fitness are recommended and warm, waterproof clothing is
essential.

*Lake Rotoiti, Nelson Lakes Difficulty: Easy*
Overnight
This is a picturesque trip around a beautiful lake with plenty of
opportunities for swimming and relaxing!

*Great walks*
The uni break is a fantastic time to check out some of NZ’s Great walks (e.g
Abel Tasman, Routeburn). These are multiday trips on well defied tracks,
with very nice huts!

Arthur's Pass: Minchin Pass route*
